Where to Buy Cheap Used Cars
by Terry Bolton
There are always people who are looking to buy cheap used cars to replace their current car. Whether it be trading up, or whether your current car is just getting too old and troublesome, car prices have put buying a brand new car out of the price range of most people, so used cars and import cars are the option of choice. There are a number of different places to buy cheap used cars, from car dealers through to seized car auctions and cars for sale by owner. Each method of buying a car has it's own advantages and disadvantages.
The traditional way to find used cars is to visit used car dealers at the local car yard. The main advantages of this are that it is convenient because the car yard is probably close by you. It is also relatively safe because should anything go wrong it is very easy to go back to the car dealer and let them know. Car dealers have to comply with local by-laws and regulations so you can buy cheap used cars from them with a degree of confidence. In a smallish community their reputation is also very important so they are less likely to try and pass off a dud. There are a few negatives to consider however. Car dealers like to buy cheap used cars, mark them up and then resell them. In fact that is of course how they make money. However you are likely to pay a little more buying a car through a car yard than if you buy online and particular if you find a good car for sale by owner. Car dealers also like to sell cars on finance, because they know when they arrange car loans that the buyer usually ends up paying much higher than the listed price.
Buying a car at seized car auctions is a nice way of getting a used car at a great price. You can often find the best used cars at seized car auctions where the original owner has been unable to meet finance payments and has had to sell their car at whatever price people will pay to go towards their debt. Most of the time there is nothing wrong with the car itself, though it is reasonably common to find that the seized cars are modified. The biggest negative about this sort of auction is that people who like to buy cheap used cars are aware of how the system works and will often be at the auction and bidding against you. To the amateur to car auctions this can mean the car they thought they would get at a bargain price is the subject of competition from experienced buyers with plenty of money to spend.
The final way to consider when you are looking to buy cheap used cars is to look out for cars that are for sale by owner. This includes local classifieds and all the cars you see parked or driving around with a big For Sale sign on them. On the positive side this is usually the cheapest way to buy a vehicle. On the negative side you usually can't get car loans for this type of sale, and there is very little legal protection if things go wrong when compared to other methods of buying a used car.
Whichever way you choose to buy cheap used cars, it's important to do all you regular checks to ensure the car you buy is the car you want.
