The Evolving Used Car Dealer
by Terry B.
Once upon a time there were two ways of getting a car. You could visit a new car dealer and buy something swishy, flashy and above all new, or you could go to used car dealers and try your luck. And in many cases it really was a case of trying your luck. The second hand dealership was an auto dealer who often had a decidedly shady reputation. In many cases this was deserved. They would choose names like "Honest Sam" or "Uncle Bob" which were meant to emphasize what a trustworthy and reliable auto dealer they were. And like every other field it pays to be weary of anyone who tells you how reliable they are, it is usually a pre-emptive defense on what other people will tell you about the used car dealer.
But the used car dealer was forced to evolve, first there was a need to shake the shady tag, both for the sake of making sales and because the public - and the authorities demanded it. Used cars for sale by an auto dealer had to meet strict standards and people would only buy certified used cars and avoid automobile dealers who didn't sell them. Many of the old used car dealers dropped out of the game, and many others changed their dealership so they could offer new and used cars for sale. New car dealers had always enjoyed an air of respectability due to their relationship with suppliers, and many used car dealers piggybacked this credibility by adding new cars and trucks for sale to their arsenal.
The whole industry changed again with the introduction of the internet. People left traditional car dealers in droves to purchase their cars online. At first it was tentatively, but pretty soon it became apparent that the internet let people take their used car search to a new level. Car shopping was no longer just a case of going around all the local used car dealers and settling on the least bad car. Now people could find a used car online and read car reviews about a whole range of pre owned cars. They could even buy used cars wholesale. Information about new and used car deals is now out there for everyone who is interested in doing some research to see and when people need to buy a car the local used car dealer is no longer the only option.
Once again the car dealership business has probably been changed forever, and once again there were two ways for existing auto dealership owners to react. Some dropped out again, and closed their yards, but the true entrepreneurs embraced the change. The pessimistic dealers saw the internet as a flood of certified pre owned cars entering the market and driving car prices down, while the optimists saw the opportunity to place their vehicles in front of a much wider group of car buying customers. They developed a second side to their business and many a used car dealer now sells more certified used cars online than they do to walk on customers in their local yard.
The market for pre owned cars has changed irreversibly, but undoubtedly for the better from the point of view of the buyer. When you buy a used car now you have the ability to read reviews on it, check it's history and that of the used car dealers yard before you buy. These powerful resources can be used for buying a local car also, but the power of information is now on your side.
