Buying and Selling Used Vehicles as a Business

Terry Bolton

You can open a dealership and earn your living by buying and selling used vehicles as a business. If you love cars, trucks and other types of vehicles and have a knack for selling, this might be the perfect business for you to own and operate. There are many people that earn a lucrative income each year doing just this and simply love their careers. Of course, you'll have to become a licensed car dealer in order to operate this type of business legally and you'll also have to have any city, state, and county licenses required to operate a business.

How does a person become a buyer and seller of used vehicles and make a success of their business? That's a very important question if you are considering getting into this business field. The sales process of a used car dealer is the same as any other sales process; it simply requires convincing someone that they simply can not live without the product you have to offer at the price you are offering it. But being a good sales person is not enough. There are lots of other details when starting a business buying and selling used vehicles.

First, determine if you are a good candidate for buying and selling used cars as a business. Do you have the motivation and drive required to keep up a high level of excitement and convey this excitement to your clients and prospective clients? If you do not have this crucial factor, you may do well for a while in the business but over time you will begin to become more and more complacent and eventually you may find you are losing the game of buying and selling used cars at a profit.

The second factor is whether you are a person that enjoys playing a numbers game. The whole idea of profit in this business is buying for a price that is much lower than the price that you sell the vehicle for to a buyer. This means that you have to obtain inventory, get any needed repairs completed, clean the vehicle up and detail it to perfect or have someone do this task, and advertise. Taking into account all the costs involved with repair, detailing, advertising and other overhead factors such as rental of your car lot, you must price the used vehicle at a price that will allow expenses to be covered and some money be left over for profit.

When buying and selling used vehicles as a business, you want to build a reputation that you are the best, most reliable, trustworthy used car dealer around. This means you have to provide a great value for the money in every vehicle you sell. You can't just pick up any vehicle and sell them without caring how they perform for the people who purchase vehicles from you. If you take that attitude, you'll soon become known as a dealer of bad cars and no one will want to do business with you.

If you want to begin buying and selling used vehicles as a business, consider the attributes you'll need to become success. Then, if you have these attributes and are willing to invest lots of hard work in your success, go for it. You might become the best used vehicle dealer in the area.
